Skownan youths walking 320 km to protest Bill C-45
A group of young people from the Skownan First Nation are walking 320 kilometres from their home to the steps of the Manitoba Legislature to protest new federal legislation.
A spokeswoman from the community said the 15 youths left their community Feb. 15, walking along Highway 6, and are expected to arrive at the Legislature mid-afternoon Thursday.
The youths are protesting the passage of Bill C-45, the omnibus federal legislation that impacts regulation of waterways, lakes and rivers – the same issue that sparked the Idle No More movement.
The spokeswoman said the Skownan youths are expected to be met by their chief, Cameron Catcheway, along with AMC grand chief Derek Nepinak and Murray Clearsky, grand chief of the Southern Chiefs Organization.
