Slutwalk returns in September

A global movement challenging attitudes about survivors of sexual violence will take to Winnipeg’s streets again this year.

Slutwalk Winnipeg 2012 will march through downtown Winnipeg on Saturday, Sept. 15, organizers announced on Friday. The march will begin at the Law Courts and follow a 1.5-kilometre route that ends at the provincial legislature, where speakers will help lead a rally.

This year, the event will also carry a slogan: "I am not the label you place on me." The slogan aims to reflect the fact that the event’s name is "troubling for some groups and individuals," organizers said in a release.

The Slutwalk movement was launched after a Toronto police officer advised a group of university students not to "dress like sluts" in order to avoid being raped.

The marches soon swept around the world, as supporters took to the streets to call for an end to victim-blaming and challenge negative social attitudes towards women.

The first Slutwalk Winnipeg saw hundreds turn out for a downtown Winnipeg march in April 2011.
