Small fire forces evacuation at Red River College campus

A small roof-top fire at Red River College’s Princess campus forced the evacuation of the building this afternoon.

Winnipeg Fire Department district chief Al Franco said workers had been using a cutting torch on the roof this morning and accidentally ignited some wood and Styrofoam.

"They tried to put it out," Franco said, but the fire re-ignited later and some smoke was drawn into the building’s third and fourth floors.

Franco said there were no injuries and it is too early to place a dollar estimate on any damage.

William Avenue between Princess and Adelaide was blocked for a time while emergency vehicles used the street as a staging area, but the roadway reopened by 4 p.m.
