Smoking ban at athletic fields in effect immediately

Take note, sports fans: it’s time to butt-out.

City council voted unanimously this morning to ban smoking within 30 metres of athletic fields where youth are playing sports. The ban is effective immediately, though it will be up to sports fans and community members to ensure spectators curb smoking on the sidelines of youth sports events.

The ban also applies to playgrounds, school grounds, public pools, spray pads, and within eight metres of hospital entrances and City of Winnipeg workplaces.

Bylaw enforcement officers can dole out fines ranging from $100 to $1,000 for smokers caught violating the bylaw, but it is expected to be mostly enforced by members of the public.
