Snow Lake water advisory should be lifted by week's end

WINNIPEG - Snow Lake’s chief administrative officer Jeff Precourt hopes the boil water advisory issued Monday for the community will be over by Friday.

"We’re just awaiting the test results," he said Wednesday.

Water samples were sent to Winnipeg to undergo testing after a large water main break caused the city to bypass the plant’s treatment system.

An alarm early Monday had alerted city officials that the water plant was losing a large amount of water because of a burst pipe under a local Snow Lake business. Precourt said that the extreme cold caused pipe to break.

Although the advisory warned residents to boil the water before consuming it, Precourt noted that the raw water had undergone the same process it had in previous years before new stringent treatment standards were set into place.

"The boil water effect was really a precautionary measure," he said. "It’s probably fine, but we’re just covering our tracks."

The advisory warns that water should be boiled for one minute before drinking, preparing food, or brushing teeth.
