Soprano Chuchman making Metropolitan Opera debut tonight in NYC

  • Print

Talk about a big break.

Winnipeg-born soprano Andriana Chuchman will make her Metropolitan Opera debut ahead of schedule in New York City tonight, singing the lead role of Adina in Donizetti’s comedy L’Elisir d’Amore. She is replacing Russian soprano Anna Netrebko, who had to withdraw from the first two performances of the show’s run due to illness. Chuchman will perform the role again on Jan. 13.

Chuchman, who sang the role of Pamina in Manitoba Opera’s 2011 production of The Magic Flute, was to make her Met debut in February as Miranda in The Enchanted Island.

Chuchman is a former student of renowned coloratura soprano Tracy Dahl, who made her own Met debut in 1991 under similar circumstances. Dahl replaced an ailing singer in the role of as Adele in Johann Strauss Jr.’s Die Fledermaus.
