Soybean and grain corn production had a record year

It’s now official — 2012 was a record year for soybean and grain corn production in Manitoba, and also a good year for spring wheat, oats, barley and sunflower seed production.

Final field crop production numbers released today by Statistics Canada show Manitoba farmers harvested 759,300 tonnes of soybeans this year, and 815,400 tonnes of grain corn. Both totals easily surpassed the previous records of 435,400 tonnes of soybeans and 495,300 tonnes of corn.

Spring wheat production was also up by 54.9 per cent to 2.9 million tonnes, oats production jumped by 31.8 per cent to 569,100 tonnes, barley production soared by 136.6 per cent to 618,300 tonnes, and sunflower seed production skyrocketed by 338.9 per cent to 86,900 tonnes.

Statistics Canada said canola production in the province also increased by 20.3 per cent to 2.1 million tonnes, even though yields were down 7.8 per cent to 28.3 bushels per acre because of unfavorable weather conditions.

The final crop production numbers are based on the results of a Statistics Canada survey of 3,627 Manitoba farmers. The survey was conducted between Oct. 26 and Nov. 13.
