Spiffy airport terminal already one year old

A year ago Monday, Winnipeggers used the old terminal building for the last time. Some were sad while others were glad it had reached the end of its useful life.
Fast-forward 12 months and a day and that outdated facility has been torn down piece by piece, and its nearly $600-million replacement at Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport is celebrating its first birthday.
Barry Rempel, president and CEO of the Winnipeg Airports Authority, said the most expensive capital project in the city's history is now "so much more than an airport terminal."
"The (airport) campus continues to grow, providing connectivity and development to enable our community's aspirations," he said.
Response to the new terminal building has been extremely positive, Rempel said, with highlights including passenger trials, being named as the World's Most Iconic airport, receiving a Going Green Award and a City of Winnipeg Accessibility Award, as well as being the site of wedding proposals, high-fashion photography, Olympic homecomings, movie shoots and proudly welcoming Her Majesty and His Royal Highness as the first official visitors.
