Sponsorship report clarifies CAO's power

A sponsorship report heading to city council on Wednesday amounts to housecleaning and will not allow Winnipeg’s chief administrative officer to do anything he can not do right now, Mayor Sam Katz said.

On Wednesday, council will peruse a report that will grant the CAO the authority to approve sponsorship deals that grant exclusive commercial rights to parks, streets, walkways and other public spaces. Fort Rouge Coun. Jenny Gerbasi has expressed concern this will consolidate more power in the hands of the CAO and open up parks to more commercialization.

In an interview today, Katz said the CAO already has this power and the report merely clarifies the public-space component. The mayor said he will clarify this information on Wednesday, when city council holds its monthly meeting.
