St. Andrews lock and dam to be closed tonight

Winnipeg river levels will start to decline in the coming weeks after federal officials close the St. Andrews Lock and Dam tonight at midnight.

The dam will be closed for the season for marine vessels at midnight, and the lock will not reopen until spring. Staff will start to raise the dam's control curtains and as a result, the Red and Assiniboine Rivers will lower gradually over the next two to three weeks as the water is released. Owners of vessels and barges along the rivers are advised to protect their property.

The gated areas below the dam may be closed due to high, turbulent waters, inclement weather or other dangerous conditions.
