First baby of the year follows family tradition

Being first is a Girardin family tradition.
At 12:40 a.m. Hudson Girardin became the first baby born in Winnipeg in 2013, following in the footsteps of his grandpa and aunt, who were also born on January 1.
Desiree Girardin said Hudson wasn't due until Jan. 3 or 9, but her water broke shortly after 5 p.m. on New Year's Eve. She and her husband, Matthew, went straight to St. Boniface Hospital where doctors eventually decided to perform a C-section, since Hudson was positioned sideways.
Girardin said doctors pulled Hudson out exactly one minute before another baby was born at the hospital at 12:41 a.m.
"He was the New Year's baby by one minute," she said, cradling her newborn son.
Hudson was 7 pounds, 15 ounces and is the younger brother to Dallas, born exactly 16 months ago on Sept. 1.
"We weren't expecting it to happen the way it did," Girardin said.
