A band constable at St. Theresa Point has been honoured for bravery by the RCMP.

Const. Timothy Mason was dispatched to a house fire in the northern community in January, 2011. When he arrived the home was engulfed in flames. Mason entered the burning house and rescued a two-year-old girl.

He then tried in vain to enter the home a second time to rescue a baby. Mason and another local resident cut a hole in the side of the house with a chainsaw but were unable to save the baby, who later succumbed to her injuries at a nursing station.

This week, the local RCMP detachment recognized Mason’s bravery. RCMP Sgt. Noel Allard presented him with a certificate recognizing his actions.

St. Theresa Point is located on the southern shore of Island Lake.
