Stay off the highways, say RCMP

The Mounties are urging people in southern Manitoba to stay home unless you absolutely can’t avoid going out.

With countless reports of people hitting the ditch and a multi-vehicle crash on the Trans-Canada Highway at Headingley, it’s not safe to be on the roads, RCMP spokeswoman Sgt. Line Karpish said.

"Stay put until things calm down" Karpish said. She added response times could depend on it.

"Clearly there’s a lot of visibility and road issues out there and we are getting reports people are hitting the ditches and we’re urging people to please stay home... The other thing is it interferes with our response times," Karpish said.

She said the blowing snow and miserable road conditions present a challenge to authorities called to scenes of accidents. So far, no injuries have been reported at any of the scenes.

But it’s bad out there: vehicles are reported in ditches throughout southern Manitoba from Virden to Steinbach.

In the city, Emterra is keeping to its schedule, mostly, collecting garbage and recycling despite the weather.

City snow plows are working on major routes and traffic appears light with few motorists venturing out.

Manitoba Highways has shut down several major highways, including the Trans Canada, in and around Winnipeg, including major routes in the Red River Valley, where the worst of the weather is venting its wrath.
