Steen Classic a hit

Fundraising golf tournament attracts hockey stars

Bigger and better continues to be the theme of the Canad Inns Steen Classic golf tournament and fundraising week, now in its fifth year.

The event, which now includes a fishing trip, a fundraising night and the golf tournament, featured an array of sports celebrities this week, all in support of the Amadeus Steen Foundation for children’s charities.

Among the golfers this morning at Glendale were Thomas Steen and son Alex of the St. Louis Blues, Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews, Stanley Cup-winner Shane Hnidy of the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs legend Darryl Sittler, T.J. Oshie of the Blues, new Winnipeg Jets defenceman Derek Meech, and recent Manitoba Moose-killers Dustin Boyd and Nigel Dawes of the Hamilton Bulldogs, the team that ousted the Moose from the AHL playoffs.

"I’m very proud," Alex Steen said this morning before teeing off. "The way it’s grown, the support we’ve gotten and the people that help us with the tournament, that support from the community and Winnipeg and the celebrities, the former and current NHL players, the musicians and actors that have supported us by showing up every year.

"And not only do they send us stuff to auction off, they take the time to come out to Winnipeg to help us. It’s just a whole bunch of great people this year. [It's] Darryl Sittler’s first year, we’re so happy.

"It’s such a friendly mentality. It’s awesome."

Steen, who was 12 when the original Jets left town for Phoenix, said he raced through the NHL schedule when it was released two weeks ago and found what he was looking for.

The Blues will play the Jets just once in the coming season, but the game’s in Winnipeg on Feb. 25.

"I’m happy that one game is in Winnipeg," the 27-year-old centre said. "I played an exhibition game here with Toronto a couple of years ago. It was incredible to step out on that ice. It’s going to be a lot of fun."
