Steinbach RCMP officer goes '3 for 3' in vehicle-related incidents
Unique situation sees charges laid against first three pulled over
Steinbach RCMP Cpl. Kyle McFadyen went "three for three" busting drivers for vehicle-related incidents last weekend.
"It’s routine to stop that many cars on the weekend but laying charges against the operators of the first three cars pulled over is the part that is unusual," said McFadyen.
"It is a unique situation. This does not mean everyone in Steinbach is a criminal."
On Nov. 30, McFadyen said he decided to head out of the RCMP office and ended up pulling over the first vehicle he saw. It was being driven by a woman who was intoxicated and banned from driving because of a previous impaired-driving conviction. She was charged with driving while prohibited and driving intoxicated.
One night later, McFadyen again decided to leave the office and once again pulled over the first vehicle he saw. The vehicle was not registered. It was towed away and charges were laid against the driver.
McFadyen’s Saturday night got even more interesting after that, as right after the vehicle was towed away, he tried to pull over another vehicle that refused to stop and drove through a residential area in what RCMP are calling a "dangerous manner."
"I booted it to keep them in my visual and when the vehicle went down a private drive I knew they were trying to avoid me."
Three men then got out of the car and tried to run off and McFadyen caught one of the men who was trying to run off.
All three men have since been arrested and charged with dangerous operation of a motorized vehicle, failing to stop for police and obstruction of justice. One of the men was also charged with possession of a weapon and one of the men also had an outstanding warrant for property crimes, failing to comply with court orders and sexual assault.
"It’s a love-hate thing when stuff like this happens, said McFadyen. It’s good we catch people especially when it comes to impaired driving, but I hate to see that people are still out there doing it."
