Stony Mountain prison is currently locked down and the Correctional Service of Canada says visits are suspended until the lockdown ends.

Staffers at the medium-security lockup are currently conducting an "exceptional search" of the prison and its inmates for contraband.

"The search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates," the CSC said in a statement issued Wednesday.

The lockdown and search began around noon Tuesday.

Visits to the prison will resume once it's considered safe, the CSC said.
