There is no surprise in the Safeway Championship top five, as Jeff Stoughton and Mike McEwen sit atop the seeding for the provincial men's curling championship.
The rest of the top five, which CurlManitoba unveiled today along with the tournament's full draw, is rounded out by Brandon skip Rob Fowler at third, fourth-seed and 2013 finalist Sean Grassie and fifth-ranked William Lyburn.
Of course, of all those curlers the lion is Stoughton, long the wall which teams long to pass. But the Manitoban women have a new champion this year, as Chelsea Carey pushed through a Scotties-absent titan Jennifer Jones -- could the men be ready for a new champ too?
"I don't see why not," McEwen grinned, at the announcement event today. "I've probably said that every year, but we feel really good collectively with what we've done the last few weeks."
The Safeway Championship kicks off on Wednesday at MTS Iceplex, the first time it's been back in Winnipeg since the 1990s.
Besides the draw, Curl Manitoba also announced the creation of the Pat Spiring Award, named in honour of the Manitoban competitor who lost his life to cancer.
During the tournament, curlers at the provincials will vote for one of their own who represents the "spirit of Pat Spiring" in ability, spirit and respect for the sport.
