WINNIPEG - Skaters at The Forks can warm up in the most famous streetcar in Manitoba history.

A wooden replica of 1919 Winnipeg General Strike-era streetcar 596 that was used in Danny Schur’s May 23 production of his musical Strike! has found new life giving shelter to skaters.

The 12-metre-long, 3.7-metre-high burgundy vehicle had been stowed away in parts underneath CN Station.

Today, it’s been set up at The Forks near the boat-rental site with stairs to the ice. Winnipeggers will be able to lace up their skates or warm up after blading down the world’s longest naturally frozen skating trail along the Assiniboine and Red rivers. They’ll also get a bit of a history lesson.

The interior of the streetcar features the only public 1919 General Strike photo essay, outside of the University of Winnipeg history department, said Schur.

"I have written, designed and installed ... historical placards that mimic the curved ads that were placed in streetcars and are still in buses," he said in an email. "The photo essay will grow during the winter so visitors to the Forks - skaters or otherwise - will have a changing 1919 General Strike history lesson to take in."
