City hall must wait another three months for a report about the feasibility of allowing Winnipeggers to keep bees.

City council’s protection and community services committee voted Thursday to grant a 90-day extension to city staff working on a report that may recommend changes to the city’s exotic animal bylaw, which currently has no provision for keeping bees within city limits.

Several North American cities allow urban beekeeping, which is seen as one means of ensuring the survival of honeybee populations decimated by colony collapse disorders.

But the city’s Animal Services Special Operating Agency has not determined what that would involve, in terms of enforcement of a future bylaw.

Council’s PCS committee may also receive a report about urban poultry farming within the next few months, said committee chairwoman Paula Havixbeck (Charleswood-Tuxedo).
