Suspension of radar, independent testing sought for camera on Grant
Critics of photo radar called for the immediate suspension of photo enforcement at Grant Avenue and Nathaniel Street today, citing an Australia case in which tickets have been pulled.
WiseUp Winnipeg and the Canadian Taxpayers Federation also want independent testing of the Grant Avenue camera to see if metal sign poles interfere with the radar's beam.
WiseUp's Todd Dube and the CTF's Colin Craig said Attorney General Andrew Swan should also freeze Grant and Nathaniel speeding tickets until after an independent review.
Both say they have opposition support.
They point to a recent case in the Province of Victoria in Australia where 28 speeding tickets have been withdrawn because of metal objects interfering with the radar's beam, producing excessive speed readings.
A similar issue was raised in a Winnipeg courtroom last week, but it was never settled because the Crown cut the case short after it stayed proceedings.
The tickets at Grant and Nathaniel became an issue last year when dozens of people complained the camera wrongly said they were speeding.
