Three killed in plane crash at Pickle Lake

Fourth occupant airlifted to hospital in Winnipeg with minor injuries

Three people died Tuesday night after a plane crashed in dense woods just outside of Pickle Lake in northwestern Ontario.

A fourth occupant was airlifted to hospital in Winnipeg with minor injuries, according to the Ontario Provincial Police.

A Lake LA 250, a plane that can take off and land on both land and water, crashed about 1.4 kilometres south of the community's airport about 8:20 p.m. in a densely wooded area.

A Winnipeg-based team from the Transportation Safety Board is heading to the community to investigate the crash. The TSB team is the closest to Pickle Lake, and has about a seven-hour drive to the scene.

Canada's Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Trenton, Ont., was notified of the crash when it received a signal from the plane's emergency locator transmitter (ELT).

Pickle Lake OPP and officers from Nishnawbe-Aski located the small plane, while Search and Rescue technicians from Canadian Forces parachuted in to assist with extrication and medical assistance.

Pickle Lake is located 425 kilometres north of Sioux Lookout, Ont.
