Police have a suspect in custody following a sexual assault Saturday night.

Just before 9 p.m., two 15-year-olds walking in the area of William Avenue and Isabel Street were approached by an unknown man in a van. He offered them a ride home and one of the girls was dropped off at an address on Redwood Avenue. The second girl was taken northbound on McPhillips Street, outside the city limits.

The girl, still in the van and fearing for her safety, managed to grab the suspect’s cellphone and text messaged her friend, telling her to contact police immediately. The man then produced a knife and began sexually assaulting the girl.

During this assault, the man received a message from the victim’s friend, indicating the police had been contacted. He drove the girl back into the city, dropping her off near the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Salter Street.

Police located the suspect in his van in the in the area of McPhillips and Court Avenue later that evening.

Farrell Francis, 51, is facing numerous charges. He is currently being detained at the Remand Centre.
