Teen charged after gun, ammo brought to south Winnipeg school

WINNIPEG - A 14-year-old brought a semi-automatic gun to a Pembina Trails school yesterday before staff there seized it, police said this morning.

Officers responded to Arthur A. Leach School at 1827 Chancellor Drive at about 3 p.m. Monday.

The 14-year-old was carrying a .25 calibre semi-automatic weapon, said police.  The student also had ammunition with him, but police did not say if it was loaded in the weapon.

The young man was in class with the weapon close by him when staff approached him and asked him to leave.

Staff were alerted to the weapon after "discussions" among people in the school alerted adults, said police.

Police said there is "no indication" the student intended to harm others with the gun, but said they don’t know why he’d bring the weapon to school.

"I think a very poor decision was made," said Const. Jason Michalyshen, Winnipeg Police Service spokesman.

The boy is charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a prohibited weapon and other offences. A small amount of marijuana was also seized.

Police said they do not believe the teen is involved in gangs. He was released to his parents’ care Monday on a promise to appear.
