Teen stable after gun discharged during hunting trip

A 14-year-old boy from Split Lake is in a Winnipeg hospital after he was shot in a hunting incident Saturday.

RCMP said the boy was in a canoe with a 23-year-old man in an area 30 kilometres south of Tataskweyak Cree Nation.

Police said it appears the two people were returning from duck hunting when a firearm discharged, striking the teenaged boy. The canoe then capsized in shallow water near shore.

The two people were able to make it to shore and out of the bush in an ATV, where they encountered paramedics from Split Lake who just happened to be passing by.

The boy was taken to the local nursing station and then transported to Winnipeg for treatment. He is listed in stable condition.

The shooting remains under investigation.
