Police divers recover teen's body from retention pond

Winnipeg Police have pulled the body of a male teenager from a northwest Winnipeg retention pond this afternoon.

Police believe he was a youth, between 16 and 17 years old, and are "focused on determining his identity," said Const. Jason Michalyshen of the Winnipeg Police Service.

The teenager was last seen "struggling to remain above water," and members of the WPS underwater search and recovery unit began the grim recovery effort for his body Tuesday morning, Michalyshen said.

The teen entered the pond Monday, and witnesses said he appeared distraught and possibly injured before he reportedly ran into the water.

"It did appear that he did remove some clothing, entered the water, and then came back onto land and was yelling some obscenities and was obviously somewhat distraught and then entered the water again," said Michalyshen. He said the teen chased one of the witnesses after they tried to "offer him assistance."

Drugs and alcohol are not being ruled out as factors that may have influenced the "unique" events that lead up to the incident, Michalyshen said.

"Based on experience, based on history, based on what was described to us, that’s certainly a possibility," he said.
