Drivers caught talking on a cellphone or texting will be dinged with two demerit points as of Aug. 1.
Justice Minister Andrew Swan made the announcement today.
The demerit points will be on top of a $200 fine.
Swan said the increased penalty was needed as not enough Manitobans have given up the habit of using a handheld device while driving.
"Too many drivers have not changed their behaviour," he said.
Demerit points affect the costs of vehicle insurance and renewing a driver's licence.
