Thompson teacher facing allegations of sexual exploitation

WINNIPEG -- A Thompson high school teacher faces a sex charge after being accused of having a relationship with a female student.

The 56-year-old teacher at R.D. Parker Collegiate, was arrested on March 24 and charged with sexual exploitation of a young person, RCMP said this morning. He has been released on a recognizance with strict conditions.

The teacher, who is scheduled to appear in court in Thompson on May 25, was arrested in the wake of a complaint from the School District of Mystery Lake about suspected inappropriate behavior involving a teacher and a teenage pupil.

RCMP identified the accused as David John Boyce.

RCMP said no additional information would be released, but media reports in Thompson have said the teacher is no longer employed at the collegiate. A report from a local radio station said the relationship between the teacher and the 16-year-old student had been going on for about three months.

Late Monday, the school district issued a statement saying the teacher had been placed on leave pending the outcome of an investigation. During the course of the investigation, the teacher reportedly resigned. He is no longer allowed on school property.
