Time to gear up for Commuter Challenge

Premier Greg Selinger urged Manitobans this morning to ride a bike, walk, take a bus or car-pool as he spoke during the Commuter Challenge kickoff at the Manitoba Hydro building on Portage Avenue.

"We encourage Manitobans to take this important step toward creating a greener province by using cleaner, healthier ways to commute," Selinger said.

Communities from across the country compete against each other in the annual Commuter Challenge, which this year takes place May 30 to June 5.

Winnipeg enters the competition this year as the reigning most commuter friendly major city, a title it's held for six consecutive years.

Participating individuals record their modes of transportation for the week. Each person who participates will be counted as a green commuter. At the end of the week, those communities with the highest average percentage of individuals using sustainable transportation to get to and from work or school will be declared the most commuter friendly.

"Green commuting is easier than many people think," Colin Crolly, chair of Resource Conservation Manitoba, the provincial organizers of the commuter challenge, said.
