PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE -- Top seed Jennifer Jones went down to a stunning defeat here at the Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts on Thursday.
Needing a draw to the eight-foot with her final rock of the tenth end, Jones fired it out the back of the house instead to hand Stonewall’s Kelsey Boettcher a game-winning steal and a 7-6 victory.
"The ice seemed to change and we just didn’t catch up on it," said Jones. "But they played great. They deserved to win that game."
Boettcher stole four different ends on Jones to author the victory. Facing seven Jones counters in the ninth end, Boettcher also coolly drew for one to send the game home for the tenth end tied 6-6.
"I honestly didn’t think about it until my third was like, ‘Well, you miss, we give up seven and we go home,’ " Boettcher said. "We’re not favoured anyway, so I thought of it like any other draw and pretended like it wasn’t there."
The loss dropped Jones to 3-1 while Boetcher stayed alive at 2-2.
In other games on the 4 p.m. draw, fourth seed Barb Spencer drummed Lori Forbes of The Pas 10-0, sixth seed Jill Thurston beat Terry Ursel of Plumas 9-6 and eighth seed Darcy Robertson beat Brandon’s Kelsey Russill 8-5.
Spencer and Thurston will head into Friday at 4-0, with Jones and Robertson a game behind at 3-1.
The Scotties continues on the 7:45 p.m. draw with second seed Cathy Overton-Clapham playing East St. Paul’s Kim Link, third seed Chelsea Carey playing Dauphin’s Lisa Menard, fifth seed Janet Harvey playing Brandon’s Liza Park and seventh seed Michelle Montford playing Miami’s Lisa DeRiviere.
Carey is 3-0 heading into tonight’s draw, while Overton-Clapham, Montford and DeRiviere are a game behind at 2-1.
