Top seeds open with wins in Brandon
The top seeds have busted out of the gate after the first couple of draws at the 2013 Canola Junior Curling Championships in Brandon.
Top seed Selena Kaatz and her St. Vital foursome opened the event, being held at the Brandon Curling Club, with a 7-3 victory over Jennifer Curle of Minnedosa in the first draw of the day.
Second-seed and defending champion Shannon Birchard, also of St. Vital, knocked off Cary Angers of Miami 7-3 while Alyssa Vandepoele and Beth Peterson, both of the Victoria Curling Club and the third and fourth seeds, also picked up wins as did fifth-seed Rachel Burtnyk of Assiniboine Memorial.
The seeding is also holding true on the junior men’s side where top seed and defending champ Kyle Doering of West Kildonan opened with a 10-2 win over JT Ryan of Assiniboine Memorial and second-seeded Matt Dunstone, also of West Kildonan, racked up an 8-1 victory over Sean Davidson of Portage.
Third-seeded Daniel Birchard of Pembina, fourth-seeded Cole Peters of West St. Paul and the fifth seed, Tanner Lott of Springfield, are all also 1-0.
Action continues through the weekend leading up to Monday’s final.
The winners advance to represent Manitoba at next month’s national junior curling championships in Fort McMurray.
