NDP nixes Tories' motion for rebate debate
WINNIPEG — Manitoba’s Tory opposition was shot down Wednesday in its attempt to hold a public meeting into the how the NDP refiled its expenses for the 1999 election campaign.
House Speaker George Hickes ruled a motion by Tory Leader Hugh McFadyen was not a matter of public importance.

McFadyen said the Tories wanted to use the last few hours of the spring session – which ends today – to debate the independence of Elections Manitoba in the matter.
"We want to get to the bottom of what happened with the NDP scheme," McFadyen said. "We want to understand why Elections Manitoba swept under the carpet. I think if we’re not successful in doing that then there are very serious questions the way democracy operates today in Manitoba."
The Tories also want a public inquiry, which the NDP has refused.
The New Democrats say they did nothing wrong in filing elections expenses, but did pay back $76,000 several years later.
The issue was mentioned in an Elections Manitoba annual report several years ago, but has only been raised by the Tories this year when they say new information came forward about how the expenses were filed.

Well to be honest I wouldn't for them if they were running for the Tories or Liberals either... I'm an Atheist ;)

Lets be honest here every one who makes a comment is just going along party lines. Those that think the NDP is wrong would not vote NDP if Jesus and the twelve Apostles were running for the NDP.

@Nelson: Thanks, I haven't laughed that hard in a long time! The won't call an inquiry because they're trying to save us money... yeah, that's why!

So the Tories have had their electorial scandal and now the NDP and its supporters think that voids this scandal??? Remember, the Tories (eventually) did the right thing and called an inquiry and then had to answer for their crimes in an election (they lost - democracy in action!). We're still waiting for NDP to do the right thing and we've had TWO elections pass with the voters blissfully unaware of this mess. Turn about is fair play - go get 'em Hugh!

Perhaps Mr. Doer does not want to waste taxpayers money, unlike the Tories.

If Doer did not do anything wrong, why is he scared of the truth coming out.

The Tories had better be careful what they wish for,I am sure there are still a few skeltons in there closet. Or in this case its the weasels blaming the foxes for who raided the hen house.
