Tory MLA Taillieu to step down

Tory MLA Mavis Taillieu is calling it quits.

In a statement released by the Progressive Conservatives this afternoon the Morris MLA said she wants to focus on family, life changes and attention to health and wellbeing, as well as be a mentor to her two sons who are forming a new business venture.

She was first elected in 2003 and again in 2007 and 2011, having served as the MLA for the Morris constituency for almost 10 years.

"I feel incredibly honoured to have been the MLA for the Morris constituency for nearly 10 years," she said in a statement. "It has been an enriching and rewarding experience serving the people in the constituency and I am thankful for the support they have shown me."

Tailleau has been the critic for Culture, Heritage and Tourism, Family Services and Housing, Immigration and Multiculturalism, Advanced Education and Literacy, and Infrastructure and Transportation. She has also served as the Official opposition House Leader and the Caucus Whip.

"I want to thank Mavis for her service to the Morris constituency, the Manitoba Legislative Assembly and to Progressive Conservative Party," Tory Opposition Leader Brian Pallister said. "In her 10 years in provincial politics, Mavis proved time and time again that she is a formidable, determined person who gets the job done. She is a tremendous asset to our caucus and we will miss her."

Pallister also called on Premier Greg Selinger to call a byelection in Morris as soon as possible so the riding is represented when the legislature resumes its sittings this spring.
