Elmwood-Transcona shifts to Tories with Toet win

Conservative Lawrence Toet has ended decades of NDP dominance in Winnipeg's eastern-most riding.

In a squeaker of a race in Elmwood-Transcona, Toet defeated one-term NDP MP Jim Maloway. Bill Blaikie, now an NDP MLA, represented the riding before Maloway.

Toet, who ran Elmwood-East Kildonan Coun. Thomas Steen's successful council campaign in 2010, said residents of east Winnipeg wanted to have a seat at the government table after being represented by the opposition NDP for so long.

"I think it's time," he said. "You have to listen to the citizens, especially when you're the new guy on the block."

Toet's first major foray into politics came in 2006, when he was part of a non-partisan group that campaigned against the OlyWest hog plant proposed by the City of Winnipeg.

His victory - and that of Tory Joyce Bateman in Winnipeg South Centre - was the result of a grassroots campaign, said Vic Toews, Manitoba's senior MP, who was handily re-elected in Provencher.
