The MS River Rouge is still stuck in the mud of the Red River this morning where it’s been sitting for nearly 24 hours. The pleasure craft on its way to Lower Fort Garry became grounded in about two feet of water just north of Miller Road off Highway 9 at around 10:30 a.m. yesterday.

Owner Kyriakos Vogiatzakis said officials are looking at closing the curtains at the St. Andrews Lock and Dam to raise the water south of Lockport and free the boat, but he hasn’t been told when that will happen.

Passengers aboard who spoke to media seemed quite unfazed by the incident, despite being stranded on the boat for at least eight hours. Vogiatzakis is grateful for their good-natured co-operation.

"Passengers on board, they had a great time," he said. "We just made the best of that scenario."

But Vogiatzakis said this mishap is just one of a string of challenges that has plagued him since purchasing the boat in 2007. The MS River Rouge is currently up for sale. After a late start to the season just a week and a half ago, Vogiatzakis anxious to get the boat unstuck in time for the evening and night cruises today.
