WINNIPEG — Family members have identified a man who was killed in Transcona early Saturday morning as Nolan Norman, who had just celebrated his 19th birthday on Nov. 9.
Norman was a former Murdoch MacKay Collegiate student who wanted to be a basketball player, but more recently started to think about joining the army, his cousin Ashley said.
His younger sister, who did not want to be named, said she heard he had attended a concert earlier Friday night. She believed he may have been involved a dispute over a woman.
Winnipeg police spokeswoman Const. Jacqueline Chaput said police were called around 3:20 this morning to the 7-Eleven at Regent Avenue and Day Street because of an injured man.
The man was rushed to hospital in critical condition suffering stab wounds to his upper body as well as other physical injuries. He died in hospital.
Chaput said investigators believe the teen was assaulted in the 300 block of Victoria Avenue. Chaput said a number of people are in police custody and the investigation continues.
The death is Winnipeg's 25th homicide of the year, Chaput said.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 986-6508 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
Meanwhile, police say the injuries of a man found in a bus shelter at Marion Street and St. Mary's Road appear to be consistent with a fall, rather than with a stabbing as was earlier believed.
Chaput said police are still investigating whether the man fell or was pushed, and are trying to confirm if he had a previous medical condition.
Chaput did not know the man's condition.

Back in June, I posed a wager at work that Winnipeg would once again be Canada's murder capital for 2009. No one would bet against that -- good move on their part!

It is funny how the city cops will spend all day handing out tickets for driving in a bus lane, or for going 63km in a 50km zone, or for turning on a red 15 minutes before the sign said you were supposed to, or for not having your seat belt on.
It is obvious that they are out to try to make a buck to pay for their pensions instead of being out in full force at night and on the weekends when they are needed.
Funny how the Army is over seas protecting people in a foreign land, but are not here protecting it's own citizens. If they were doing foot patrols here, 90% of our problems would be solved before they were able to get started.
Yes, it is time for a majority government that is tough on crime.

My sympathy goes out to the family and people who knew this young man.
I am sure at 3:20 in the morning, alcohol was involved... and the government is so strict with selling cigarettes to young kids. Maybe it is time to take another look at the legal drinking age in Manitoba. When was the last time you heard tobacco was involved in a murder? Just throwing it out there.

Bottom line is an arguement over a Woman or Man is not worth dying for or going to Jail for.

Keep dumbing yourselves up by watching Oprah, Dr. Phil & the Doctors. We spend so much time watching BS on TV instead of dealing with real life. Maybe instead of watching USA Reality TV, our society should be spending time with our youth and showing them the value of life. The young adults in our city do not seem to care for one another. Now a 19 year old is dead? Poor parents, they do not deserve to have their baby killed by a outburst of violence.

Why does everybody have to drag politics into this? Sh1t happens, people get hurt. Human nature! And actually, crime is not as rampant as the media claims it is. Google 'Winnipeg crime rates'! Many types of crime are declining.
I grew up in Transcona and this guy lived near me and went to my school. It's a sad day for the community. Many condolences to his family.

To the writer of: you people have no clue. We are not interested in what happens in major U.S cities. And if there are more murders in other Canadian cities, then why has Winnipeg been referred to as the murder capital of Canada on numerous occasions? I think you have no clue. As much as I love this city it is far from safe.

Give Mr Harper a majority and something will be donw.. Then arrest every bloc member for treason and remove that party from FEDERAL politics, they are the softest on crime party in Canada

I am so tired of hearing how awful this city is. Would all of those who think so, please move on, to another city preferably? Try watching the news for any city of comparable size, try listening to their police scanner. Sure we should always be working to make things better, but we are in no worse shape than any other city.
We have few details, but it sounds like this was just one of those senseless things that happens in the heat of the moment. It could have happened to the kid of any one of you.
My heartfelt condolences to all his friends and family.

The youth today have to understand that acting and doing stupid things in this way by not looking into the future and understanding that their actions will only put them where they belong...if you're going be reckless your life you will go no where. The decisions you make will always come back to bite you in the a**! Instead of trying to be a wanna be gangsta try being a productive part of society. Our sincere condolences go out to the family. And we apologize for the loss of your loved one due to someone's irresposible behavior and their lack of knowing right from wrong even if they are concidered an "adult".
