Train derails in Carman, no injuries

A train derailment in Carman Friday is more of an inconvenience than a hazard.

"It’s blocking the highway, but if you go another block down you can get across the track," said Carman Mayor Bob Mitchell who helped lead a group of vehicles around the train on his way to work.

An engine and two cars veered off the tracks sometime overnight in the middle of the town, but stayed vertical and didn’t fall on their side, Mitchell said. Officials from Central Manitoba Railway, which operates the train, refused comment.

The short line track runs from Winnipeg to Graysville, about 14 kilometres west of Carman, hauling grain and other items from Carman’s industrial park where trains also switch lines.

"I would think it’s more of an inconvenience; I can’t see it being a danger. It’s a pain for the truckers, though -- there’s tons of truck traffic that goes through here and it’s tougher to get around if you’re pulling a trailer," Mitchell said.

The derailment happened right in the middle of town on Highway 13/Main Street near Centre Avenue by the Liquor Mart, down the road from Carman Co-op.

Both were still accessible, which shouldn’t mess up anyone’s long weekend plans.

"You can still get to the Co-op to get your steaks," Mitchell said with a laugh.
