A train fire caused a highway outside Winnipeg to be closed for a few hours this morning.
RCMP spokeswoman Sgt. Line Karpish said today officers had to detour traffic on PR 221 from PTH 101 to Rosser after the main engine on a CP Rail train caught fire earlier today.
"They separated it from the load they were taking," Karpish said.
"The fire was contained."
The highway was closed at about 5:30 a.m., and reopened at about 9:30 a.m.
CP Rail spokesman Ed Greenberg said they are investigating why the engine malfunctioned and caught fire.
"The crew shut down the engine and alerted the local fire department," Greenberg said.
"(The fire) was contained to one of the engines. There were no injuries, no risk to the surrounding area or to the train."
Greenberg said the freight train was eastbound at the time, but he didn’t know how many cars it contained.
