Transit prices to rise five cents Jan. 1 but more fare options on way

Winnipeg Transit fares will go up a nickel for adults on Jan. 1, but more fare options will become available later in 2013.

On Tuesday, city council’s public works committee will consider a 2013 fare schedule for Winnipeg Transit that includes another inflationary increase for cash fares but also new payment options that will come into effect when electronic fare-collection systems are installed on buses late next year.

Single rides will rise to $2.50 on Jan. 1, while reduced cash fares for students and seniors will be $2 in 2013.

When the new electronic fare-collection system is installed, fares stored on new e-cards will be $2.30 for adults and $1.75 for students and seniors. Winnipeg Transit will also offer a variety of electronic payment options that include 24-hour passes, three-day passes, five-day passes, week-long passes, two-week passes, 21-day passes, 28-day passes, monthly passes, semester passes for students and annual passes.

Transit will also offer fare cards that can be loaded up with as much as $500 online, over the phone and in person at transit kiosks.

Pending approval on Tuesday, the fare schedule must also be approved by executive policy committee on Nov. 7 and city council as a whole on Nov. 14.
