Transit users can get information on mobile phones

Winnipeg Transit users can now download a mobile phone app to get the real-time goods on when their next bus is coming.

Transit officials announced Wednesday that they have opened their BUSguide website, which also provides information, departures and routes.

The website can be accessed at beta.m.winnipegtransit.com, according a transit media release.

The BUSgadget app, available for download from www.winnipegtransit.com, can be customized to display and countdown upcoming real-time bus departures for a passenger’s favourite stops, the news release says.

The innovations are the latest in an initiative that began last September with the installation of the GPS-based "iBUS" technology on the Winnipeg transit fleet.

This allows for the monitoring of the location of each bus and to the automatic reporting of schedule deviations to live databases at Transit’s Control Centre.

Transit passengers can also use their cell phone’s text feature to access schedule information.

So far, 64 of 100 electronic signs at major stops have been installed to provide real-time bus arrival and departure times.
