Transit won't accept pennies, bills starting tomorrow

Winnipeg Transit will no longer accept pennies or bills starting Friday, Feb. 1.
The new policy is to accommodate electronic fare boxes that will replace the old manual fareboxes.
The new boxes accept only Canadian or US coins of a nickel or higher denomination. The boxes will automatically validate and count coins as they are dropped into the coin slot.
However, the newer technology will still not give back change.
Phase two of the new fare collection system, expected to be completed in late 2013, will introduce new "Smartcard" technology that will replace tickets and paper passes.
