Travelling city chefs win online video award

WINNIPEG - Three culinary adventurers from Winnipeg have won a 2010 Tasty Award for their web video series, Without Borders.

Clayton Klyne, Chad Klyne and Lyndon Wiebe are young trained chefs who created an online cooking show while travelling across Asia on a low budget.

On Thursday in San Francisco, the trio won a Tasty Award for best online food travel series.

The awards, launched in 2008, recognize excellence in film, TV and online programming devoted to food, drink, fashion and design.

The self-funded Without Borders chefs, who had no previous experience as video artists, demonstrated in their colourful, spontaneous series how regional dishes are made in Asia, often in "dodgy makeshift kitchens" or at food stalls.

It appears from a link on the Tasty Awards website that the Winnipeggers’ winning submission was a video instalment shot in Cambodia. It shows how to make Kampot pepper crab, from catching the crab to preparing it over a smoky fire.

The widely travelled, culturally curious chefs have cooked and learned regional cuisines in countries including Scotland, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

On their website (www.withoutborderschefs.com, which includes links to their videos) they say they hope to be discovered and given a TV series.

"Eventually a broadcaster will recognize what a great concept this is and turn our dream of getting paid to do this into reality," they said.
