WINNIPEG — A fatal accident Sunday night at Toronto's Pearson International Airport has left a former-Winnipeg family shocked and grieving. As they struggle to come to terms with their tragedy, friends here are doing everything they can to support them, including setting up a trust fund.
Fifteen-month-old Lucca Romano wiggled out of his mother's arms and fell more than 15 metres from the upper departures level of Terminal 1 Sunday. The Romano family, who recently moved to Burlington, Ont. from St. Vital, was on its way to Buenos Aires for Lucca's baptism.
To help with funeral and travel expenses, close family friends Guillermo and Anne-Sophie Bellido of Winnipeg, along with friends from the local Argentine community, have set up a trust fund for the Romanos. Lucca will be buried in Argentina.
"Money does not replace a child, we're just trying to do what we can" by making the arrangements a little easier for them, said Anne-Sophie Bellido.
She also said that Flavio and Veronica Romano are unemployed right now because of their recent move.
At least $1500 dollars is still needed as soon as possible, said Bellido.
"Every little bit helps, even a few dollars," she emphasized. "Anything helps."
