Two Manitoba companies approved for broadband funding

WINNIPEG — Two Manitoba companies were given slices of a $76.7-million pie to expand broadband Internet access across the country.

Manitoba NetSet Ltd. and OmniGlobe Networks - Shamattawa First Nation were conditionally approved for the funding at an announcement in downtown Winnipeg Sunday afternoon by Industry Minister Tony Clement.

Seventeen companies were conditionally approved for funding. Sunday’s announcement was the first phase of funding announcements of a $225-million program.

The projects will bring high-speed Internet access to 169,000 households unserved or underserved by high-speed Internet, most of them in rural or remote areas, according to a government press release.

The government said high-speed Internet in these areas will help improve access to telehealth, business opportunities and distance education.
