Three Manitobans to play on national volleyball team

Three Manitobans have been selected to Canada’s National Junior Volleyball team Tuesday.

The University of Winnipeg in conjunction with Volleyball Canada announced that Josh McKay, Riley Delavau, and Jarrid Ireland will join the team in the upcoming NORCECA Under-21 Men’s Volleyball Championships August 27, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Both McKay and Delavau have played together since grade 8, first for Darwin School followed by four years at Dakota Collegiate. They both currently play for the Winnipeg Wesmen.

"Having two locally developed players selected to the Junior National Team as part of our program at the University of Winnipeg is a source of pride for everyone on our team," said Wesmen head coach Larry McKay. "They represent the level of work and excellence all our players strive for."

Ireland, born and raised in Winnipeg, played last season at the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, where he earned the nod for west rookie all-star.

Canada will enter the NORCECA tournament looking to grab one of two qualifying spots for the 2013 FIVB Men’s Junior World Championship. The tournament runs biannually and is represented by teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

Canada hosted the 2011 edition of the tournament, finishing with a second-place finish. The national team has medalled in five of the last seven tournaments.
