  • Print

Two Winnipeg men were arrested early Thursday morning after they were stopped for running a red light in a stolen car and one of them tried to flee on foot and then assaulted Winnipeg police officers.

After police pulled over a stolen Chevrolet Cavalier in the area of Rupert Avenue and King Street, the driver  tried to run away while being arrested for impaired driving.

Police caught him, but he became combative and assaulted two officers. Additional police, including the Tactical Support Team, were called in to help.

Michael Robert Fenner, 37, has been charged with eight offences including possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, impaired driving, failure to provide a breath sample, assaulting a peace officer, assault with a weapon, escaping lawful custody and two highway traffic act violations.

The passenger, Johnny Baker, 41, has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime and breach of probation.

Both men were detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
