Two people were taken to hospital with serious injuries after their vehicle collided with a semi-trailer at the intersection of Nairn Avenue and Grey Street about 9:45 a.m. today.
Police say early reports had one person in critical condition and another in unstable condition.
The crash scene is at the foot of the Nairn overpass and is causing traffic delays. Police have asked motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area.
Maggie Pearson owns Metro Centre Trailers at that intersection. She said she heard the impact and came outside of her business to see a blue SUV "with a smashed side."
She said several motorists went to the aid of the couple inside the SUV, while others helped divert traffic.
"It was amazing to see people helping," said Pearson, who called 911 about the collision. "People were checking to see if (the occupants of the SUV) were OK. They were an elderly couple, it looked like."
