Two drivers in critical condition after overnight crashes
Part of Henderson Highway has been reopened to motorists after being closed for several hours following a serious accident that sent a driver crashing into a tree.
Winnipeg police said the incident occurred at 4:05 a.m. Sunday in the 200 block of Henderson Highway when a man travelling south lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree.
The tree was sheered off by the impact and the vehicle came to rest on its roof in a northbound lane.
The driver is in hospital in critical condition.
Members of the central traffic unit are continuing to investigate.
"It looks like he ripped it off clean," said Frank, an area resident looking at the broken tree and vehicle wreckage.
Frank, who did not want to reveal his last name, said he saw flashing lights early this morning near his home and went to see what had happened. He said he thinks the vehicle must have been travelling at a high rate of speed to cause that much damage.
The crash was the second major collision that occurred overnight.
Around 11:40 p.m., a Chevrolet Cobalt was struck by a Ford F-150 pickup truck at the intersection of Polson Avenue and Airlies Street in the North End.
The man driving the Cobalt was taken to hospital in critical condition, and a passenger, another man, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the F-150 fled on foot.
The roadway is now open to traffic, and police are investigating the incident.
