U.S. consul joins religious leaders in show of solidarity

U.S. Consul Timothy Cipullo joined Winnipeg religious, community and political leaders today at an event designed to promote the importance of social harmony in the aftermath of disturbing incidents of hate and violence.
About 50 people attended the gathering, sponsored by the Islamic Social Services Association and the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg, at the Manitoba Legislative Building.
They were responding to the slaying of the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans in Libya last week, as well as the anti-Semitic posters plastered in downtown Winnipeg recently and offensive cartoons in a French satirical magazine depicting the Prophet Muhammad.
"This is the time for us, at least, in this little corner of the world, to show people that we all stand together — that hate cannot divide us and violence cannot divide us," said Shahina Siddiqui, an organizer of the event.
Among those in attendance were representatives of the Anglican, Roman Catholic and United churches as well as the Hindu, Jewish, Mennonite, Sikh and Baha’i communities. An Aboriginal elder also addressed the group.
