U.S. kidnapping suspect arrested in Brandon

BRANDON — Police descended on the Casablanca Motor Inn in Brandon Sunday and arrested an American fugitive wanted by the FBI for kidnapping.

Monty Turner, 51, of Longmont, Colo., was arrested two hours after checking in at the motel with his three-year-old son.

He has been accused of attacking his estranged wife with pepper spray and a stun gun before taking the boy from her home, according to reports from 9News NBC in Colorado.

After checking in, they left for the McDonald’s restaurant next door for some food, said motel manager Bernie Hiebert.

"They looked pretty tired, both of them," Hiebert said. "He says ‘We can use some sleep’ and I checked them in. They didn’t look suspicious or anything."

He said Turner paid with a credit card, provided his driver’s licence and filled out his information on the motel registration sheet.

Hiebert said the boy didn’t look scared or distressed and he even came up to him and introduced himself and his dad.

About two hours later, Hiebert said about five police cars raced into the motel parking lot from both entrances. Officers then knocked on the door of the room the man had rented, all while the manager watched from a distance.

"I couldn’t believe it," Hiebert said.

The Brandon Police Service said local officials are working with the federal department of justice, Manitoba Justice, the Canada Border Services Agency and U.S. authorities.

The child has been turned over to Child and Family Services of Western Manitoba until arrangements can be made to return him to Colorado. News reports suggest the boy could be home as early as tomorrow.

Brandy Turner, the boy’s mother, spoke to Colorado reporters on Saturday afternoon as police issued an amber alert for the missing boy.

"He definitely had a plan," Brandy Turner said, according to 9News. "He had the pepper spray. He had the Taser. He had a bike with a baby seat on it. It appears that he had somebody waiting with a vehicle."
