United Way's goal is to break the $20-million barrier

For the first time in United Way history, the campaign goal for 2012 is to break the $20-million barrier.

"And we’re counting on more Winnipeggers than ever to make that happen," said campaign chair Doug Finkbeiner. "I have a sense that people may see us achieving our goals every year and feel perhaps we’re doing fine without their help. On the contrary, we need everybody to do what they can for our community and the people who live here. If you love Winnipeg, a great way to show it is by supporting United Way of Winnipeg."

The announcement today was part of a launch that attracted 1,200 volunteers to Red River College’s Stevenson Campus for the Plane Pull event, where 49 teams made up from workplaces throughout the city pulled together to drag a 727 and DC10 across 20 feet of tarmac.

While the official kickoff was today, the campaign has already raised over $7.7 million – or 38 percent of the goal.

Also, for the first time ever, teams competing in the plane pull raised pledges totalling over $11,000.

"Each of us can make a difference," Finkbeiner said. "And all of us can make real and lasting change in Winnipeg possible when we pull together and combine our actions and contributions. United Way of Winnipeg exists specifically for that purpose – it was created by Winnipeggers for Winnipeggers."
